14 daguerreotypes. 13 sixth plates. 1 ninth plate. 6 full cases. 4 half cases. 3 uncased. The ninth plate has a half case. 3 male & female couples. 6 of women, 5 of men.
Features:
1) 1840s Woman identified as "Tryphena Reed Mead Wife of Zadok Mead". A quick internet search finds Tryphena was born in 1780 in Connecticut, and passed away in Chautauqua County, New York. Zadock was born in 1776 at the end of the Revolutionary War in Berkshire County, Ma.
2) Woman with extensive genealogy inside the case.
3) Man with penciled pair of initials inside case and "Reading, Pa."
4) The ninth plate has an ad for Tyler & Co., Cincinnati "Thirty operators employed in making 800 Portraits daily, by a new German process connected with machinery, and the tripple [sic] Camera, which takes three likenesses at one sitting. Superior Daguerreotypes for 35 cents and upwards."
This is a generous donation from David R. Phillips, facilitated by Neil MacDonald of Rare Photo Gallery. Mr. MacDonald generously steered Mr. Phillips' collection to The Daguerreian Society rather than handle it himself. 100% OF THE PROCEEDS WILL GO TO THE DAGUERREIAN SOCIETY.
