Description
**First Time At Auction**
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. 19th century CE. A club made from highly-burnished palm wood with a large block-shaped club on one end and an intricately-carved elongated ancestor face mask on the other. The club end has two broad and well-worn surfaces (on front and back), and two flat and narrow sides meant for pulverizing palm stems and other plant-based material. The shaft features a large amount of well-carved sawtooth and rectangular patterns near both ends, and has a smooth, easy-to-grip midsection. Sago is a starch extracted from the spongy center of various tropical palm stems and is a major food staple for the indigenous PNG residents. A beautiful example of PNG tooling!
