Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden ancestor figure with very thin shell inlays for eyes that give them a startling, glowing appearance. The body is painted with geometric creamy white and pale orange motifs, probably meant to simulate tattooing of real individuals; the face is particularly ornate. The figure is tall, with arms pressed to the sides and prominent genitalia. A rounded headdress capped by a bulbous projection rises from the top of the head. Size: 2.5" W x 23.75" H (6.4 cm x 60.3 cm); 25.35" H (64.4 cm) on included custom stand.
