**First Time At Auction**

North America, United States of America, Civil War period, ca. 1861 to 1865 CE. A metal surgeon's scalpel used for performing complex medical procedures (oftentimes un-anaesthetized amputations) with a smooth and slender dark wood handle. The blade, comprised of one long straight edge and one shorter curved edge, was also used as a fleam (also fleame, phleam, flew, flue, or flem) meant for bloodletting and other incision-necessitating procedures. Still works! Size: 7" L x 0.7" W (17.8 cm x 1.8 cm).
