Item Details
Description
North America, United States, Vicksburg Mississippi, Civil War Era, ca. 1863 CE. Wow! A page from "The Daily Citizen" a newspaper printed on a sheet of wallpaper (see more on this below), a sturdy material which preserved this document nicely! The news for this era of unrest and war is unsurprisingly grim, but fascinating! The first entry sets the tone: "MRS. CISCO WAS INSTANTLY KILLED ON MONDAY." The following entries detail the war, and this is clearly a Confederate sympathizing newspaper; Vicksburg, Mississippi was one of the last Confederate strongholds of strategic importance on the Mississippi River. The news includes several days worth, from July 2nd to July 4th, in which a major event occurred, when General Uylsses Grant seized Vicksburg. With Grant's victory of the city, the newspaper concluded that these changes in power will mark the final edition of "The Daily Citizen" printed on wallpaper. Size of printed area: 16.875" L x 9.125" W (42.9 cm x 23.2 cm); with border: 19.25" L x 11.75" W (48.9 cm x 29.8 cm)

On several occasions between June 16th and July 2nd of 1863, "The Daily Citizen" publisher ran out of the usual newsprint paper and resorted to printing on wallpaper. Interestingly the last entry contains a self prophecy for the paper: "This is the last wall-paper edition, and is, excepting this note, from the types as we found them. It will be valuable hereafter as a curiosity." This paper certainly is a rare and valuable piece! A must for Civil War collectors!
