Description
**Back at auction due to non-paying bidder**
Pre-Columbian, Central Peru, Huari/Wari, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. An impressive anthropomorphic vessel, most likely used at ceremonial feasts given its elaborate decoration. The Huari/Wari culture used art including textiles and pottery to demonstrate their ideas about society, nature, and the cosmos. This example is a form known as a face neck jar, and it depicts an elite personage with a carefully modeled and detailed face, dressed in an ornately adorned tunic, painted to look like a woven red, black and cream textile. Conical red headdress with a circular pattern and painted in cream-colored slip. The attention paid to the decoration of this piece indicates that the person depicted probably represented a confident royal or deity. Size: 8" W x 11.5" H (20.3 cm x 29.2 cm)
