Description
John A. Dix (1798-1879) Union General, statesman. Dix served as Secretary of the Treasury, United States Senator, and New York Governor. He was also a Union major general during the Civil War. Considered too old for field command, Dix's most distinguished contribution during the war was the suppression of the New York Draft Riots in July 1863. 7” x 5 ½” check signed, as commissioner of the Canal Fund, the “New York State Bank”, signed by Dix and two other commissioners.
