John A. Dix (1798-1879) President Buchanan's Secretary of the Treasury, U.S. Senator, Union General who gave the order in New Orleans to "shoot on the spot" anyone who tried to take down the American flag and later Governor of New York. This is a Jan. 3, 1849 letter to then Secretary of the Treasury Frank J. Walker recommending an old friend L.P. Noble for a treasury post, Dix was a U.S. Senator at the time, nice signature of John A. Dix. Letter accompanied by a Civil War CDV of General Dix
