Map Dimensions: 13.5 X 19.3 in.

Condition: Map is Very Good. Slight age toning, more in margins, and some foxing, not detracting from the map. Colored. Mounted onto board for easy framing.

This highly attractive map of Virginia and the Carolinas became the prototype map of the region for the first half of the 17th century and continued to influence the cartography of the region until the middle/late of the 18th century. Chesapeake Bay, here called Chesepioock Sinus, and the area south towards C.S. Romano Hispanis are shown as well as the Indian villages of Paquiwok, Croatoan, and Wococon. It erroneously shows a large inland lake, Lacus aquae dulcis,from which theR. de May flows. The map is extensively decorated with depictions of Indian villages incorporated in the title cartouche, a Floridian king and queen and Virginian natives in a canoe, wildlife including a wild turkey, ships, sea monsters and a superb compass rose. Hand colored.
