Description
Mercator's famous composite map of five West Indian islands, first published in his Atlas in 1606, reappeared in a reduced version in the Mercator/Hondius Atlas Minor of 1607 and was republished in several editions throughout the first half of the 17th century. The miniature map consists of two main maps of Cuba and Hispaniola, each with a title cartouche and mileage scale, and four smaller maps of Havana harbor, Jamaica, Puerto Rico (I. S. Ioannis), and Margarita Island off the coast of Venezuela.
Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) was a cartographer renowned for creating a world map based on a new projection which represented sailing courses of constant bearing as straight lines - an innovation that simplified navigation.
