Description
Magnificent Map. Published in Amsterdam, Dutch edition. Based on Henricus' brother's Jodocus 1606 Map which he modified and updated, producing a dominant image of the new world for Europeans in the first half of the 17th century. Among the many interesting features are: nice details naming California locations, no Great Lakes shown, oversized and misshapen north western North America. Rio Grande flows into the gulf of California, the famous seven cities of Cibola appear on the banks of a large imaginary lake, the east coast is misshapen but many settlements are named. South America is oversized, with a large inlet sea. A group of cannibals are shown. In addition two strip work cartouche's show the polar regions, the northern region is based on the theory of Frobisher view of a north west passage. The southern polar region shows the long held belief of a 'mystical' southern continent. Script on verso.
