Item Details
Description
Sigmund Freud & William Christian Bullitt. Thomas Woodrow Wilson, Twenty-Eighth President of the United States, A Psychological Study. Published by Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston; The Riverside Press, Cambridge, 1967.
  • First printing. With W on copyright page. Title in red, black, & white. 307pp.
  • Surprisingly, current President is not the first to be a subject of Psychiatric Inquiries.

  • Thomas Woodrow Wilson, Twenty-Eighth President of the United States. A Psychological Study (1932).
  • Freuds portrait of the psychotic Wilson, the Prince of Peace, preaching gibberish all across America about the vengeful Treaty of Versailles, is the culmination of an intellectual event of the first order.
  • In May 1930, during a visit to the Berlin clinic at Schloss Tegel, William C. Bullitt (journalist and 1st US Ambassador to Communist Russia) told Zigmund Freud about plans for a book on the Treaty of Versailles. Freud suggested that he contribute a study of President Wilson and immediately began writing. In August 1931, Ambassador Bullitt informed Colonel House, a former adviser of Wilson that the 1st version of the book is almost complete, and, in April 1932, it was finally finished.
  • Publication was delayed by Freud, wanted to add new material that Bullitt rejected. In June 1938, Bullitt obtained from Freud the publishing authorization, but the Second World War and further events delayed this publication until 1966.

  • The introduction by Bullitt - Digest of Data on the Childhood and Youth of Thomas Woodrow Wilson, followed by Psychological Study signed by both authors. The book contains thirty-five short chapters of commentary on the principal episodes of Wilsons life, from his rise to power until his paralysis in September 1919 and death on February 3, 1924.
