Sri Lanka, ca. early 20th century CE. A polychrome, hand carved and painted Sanni mask used in healing exorcist ceremonies. As is traditional, this example depicts an ugly creature with a frighteningly wide-eyed and toothy expression. A colorful example, painted with a dark green complexion with details in red, yellow, white, and gold - presenting a bizarre cock-eyed expression with asymmetrically curled, mustachioed lips. Slits were carved under the eyes for the masquerader's vision. Size: 5.375" W x 7.125" H (13.7 cm x 18.1 cm)

Losses to teeth and peripheries. Surface wear with pigment losses as shown. Old label on verso reads "Buta Mask from Lombok" but we have identified this mask as a Sri Lankan Sanni mask.
