Item Details
Description
Asia, Japan, ca. early 20th century CE. A skillfully executed, ink-on-paper scroll with a swirling image of a dragon. On the lower right is a red stamp signature; two further stamps and a series of kanji, perhaps a poem, are in the upper left corner. The dragon seems to be rising from the waves, with thick clouds behind him, his eye looking back toward the viewer as he ascends. The drawing is bounded by two strips of blue silk, one each on top and bottom. The watercolor-like ink pairs well with the dragon, considered a water deity in Japanese lore. Comes stored in original bamboo box with Japanese printed label. Size of drawing: 12.8" W x 40.5" H (32.5 cm x 102.9 cm); size of box: 20" L x 3" W x 2.5" H (50.8 cm x 7.6 cm x 6.4 cm).
