First time at auction…
East Asia, Japan, late 19th to early 20th century. A large Japanese commemorative hanging scroll (kakejiku) once owned by a pilgrim who visited 33 Buddhist temples on the Saikoku Kannon pilgrimage route. At each site, the priest inscribed the scroll in black and marked it with a red temple goshuin (shrine) stamp to serve as proof of the pilgrim's visit to a sacred temple. The piece is mounted with gold on red and gold on black floral-patterned fabric borders, lovely brass fittings to ends of scroll adorned with floral motifs, and fabric ties. Size (section with kanji and temple stamps): 49.5" L x 14.75" W (125.7 cm x 37.5 cm) Size (full scroll): 78" L x 20.875" W (198.1 cm x 53 cm)

Condition
Expected age wear with normal toning, minor crease marks, stains, and slight abrasions. Kanji and stamps are legible. Slight separation between scroll painting and backing. Verso has some surface losses as shown. Decorative brass fittings to ends of scroll show slight age wear but are still quite nice.
