Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Mixtec people, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A trio of heavy copper axes (also called celts) that could also function as chisels. One is wide and flaring, another thick and long, and the third small and thin with sharply hooked blade edges. The two larger of these may have been part of a tlaximaltepoztli, a common weapon used throughout Mesoamerica, with a copper or bronze axe head inlaid into a hole through the wooden haft. This weapon represents Tepoztecatl, the god of fertility. Size of widest: 4" L x 4" W x 0.35" H (10.2 cm x 10.2 cm x 0.9 cm)

Provenance: ex Historia Antiques, Santa Monica, California, USA, ex James Caswell collection
