Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1470 to 1532 CE. A cast copper axe with a broad, symmetrical blade similar to that of a tumi and a round socket with a monkey's face on its butt and two projecting, round ears that stick out to either side. The monkey face is abstract but recognizable, with a heart-shaped face and raised cylindrical eyes that could have once had inlays. Ceremonial axes played an important role in the Inca world, demonstrating social position and, in turn, favor from deities. Size: 4.25" W x 2.8" H (10.8 cm x 7.1 cm); 4.25" H (10.8 cm) on included custom stand.
