PENNSYLVANIA DATED LINEN PLAIN-WEAVE HAND TOWEL / SHOW TOWEL, with cross-stitch embroidery, needle lace, and fringe, rectangular, having seams at top and side edges, and section of buttonhole stitch needle lace between embroidered section and fringe; design featuring six motifs in two rows at the top and three elements separated by initials "ME", second row having two stars with abstract design in middle, embroidered along bottom "Magdalena Emrey 1823" with stars on each side, the next row having five elements, and the bottom row having two birds, one on each side of a heart, with zig-zag row of stitching and a flower on each side. Possibly Chester Co., Pennsylvania. Dated 1823. 41 1/4" x 14" OA.
Good condition overall with some toning and bleeding of dye in black threads.
Provenance: From the Allentown Art Museum to benefit future acquisitions for the Museum's textile collection.
