Description
Pre-Columbian, West coast of Mexico, Colima, ca. 200 BCE/200 CE. Rare and quite remarkable pottery rattle in the form of a bird. Bird of prey, wings tucked tight against its sides as if diving to catch its next meal, mouth open showing curved upper beak, feet extended behind its tail feathers; wing and tail feather with incised decorations. The body is hollow save the addition of a set of rattling beads which indicates this was used in dance ceremonies or would have been used in shamanic rituals. Quite rare and fabulous! Custom stand. Size: 12.25" L (31.1 cm)
