Item Details

Description

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Muisca culture, ca. 1200 to 1538 CE. A cream-colored spouted jar with dark red pigment details over the terracotta. The spout is in the form of a delightful dignitary, known as a cacique - these were the individuals who governed each village in the region. The face is well-rendered, with thin slits for eyes and mouth. He wears a wonderful braided headband around the spout that forms his hat and has a pendant in the center. He wears a necklace and has two bands draped across his body. On one shoulder, he wears a round badge. Size: 6" W x 7" H (15.2 cm x 17.8 cm)

The caciques were responsible for the welfare of their communities; they received tribute (in the form of gold and textiles) and mobilized labor forces for building projects and agriculture. They lived in large, enclosed residential compounds and paid their laborers in maize beer and textiles. A vessel like this one was probably made to hold this beer.
