Item Details

Description

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona, ca. 1000 to 1550 CE. A mold-formed pottery jar of petite, tetrapod form depicting a solar deity seated on a bench adorned with 2 caiman heads. The prominent figure presents with a deeply wrinkled visage beneath a rayed headdress, bulky armor with a caiman head emanating from each shoulder, and clenched fists flanking his exposed genitalia. Remains of fugitive white pigment are visible within some of the finely incised decorations. Size: 2.875" W x 2.25" H (7.3 cm x 5.7 cm)
