Description
Figures of love and sex in ancient Greece!
Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 323 to 31 BCE. A mold-made hollow ceramic depiction of the goddess Aphrodite (goddess of love, beauty, sexuality, and procreation), in all her natural beauty, facing forward and standing upright with her right hand placed on her hip, beside her son Eros (god of sexual desire, love, and attraction) holding his lyre atop a column. The lyre was a stringed musical instrument played by the ancient Greeks and is perhaps the most well-known instrument of the Greek world, featured prominently in Greek mythology. In addition to the gracefully modeled forms, incised details highlight the contours of the figures as well as the column's flutes and the acanthus leaves of its capital. A lovely example! Custom stand. Size: 3.625" W x 8.625" H (9.2 cm x 21.9 cm); 9" H (22.9 cm) on stand
Provenance: private New Jersey USA collection, acquired over twenty years ago
