Description
Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 2nd century BCE. A hollow pottery statuette - made to be attached to a larger piece - depicting a seated male figure. He wears nothing but a cape and hat, with the cape thrown back over his shoulders, revealing a corpulent belly, prominent genitalia, and a bearded face. Remains of red and white pigment suggest that he was once brightly painted. The figure most likely represents Silenus, the tutor and follower of Dionysus, who here, as always, is depicted as an older man with a large, full beard, caught in the act of partying. Themes of Dionysus and his followers were particularly popular during this time period, as control of the Mediterranean shifted from Greece to Rome. Size: 2" L x 2.55" W x 3.1" H (5.1 cm x 6.5 cm x 7.9 cm)
