Description
DESCRIPTION: 19th century Wiegand & Snowden amputation kit. Most pieces marked "Wiegand & Snowden". In wood and brass case. PROVENANCE: Per consignor information, belonged to Dr. Charles Snowden Pancoast of Camden, New Jersey. Dr. Pancoast studied at Jefferson Medical College and then graduated from the Medico-Chirurgical College in Philadelphia in 1910. He was one of the first surgeons to help in the first World War, leaving in 1915 for the Balkans and served in hospitals in Hungary and Bulgaria. He was considered to be a spy by the Germans and ill-treated during his time in Bulgaria. MEASUREMENTS: Case 16-1/2" x 5-3/4" x 2-5/8". CONDITION: Abrasions and wear to case. Toning to straps and handles of instruments. Appears complete. Key included.
