DESCRIPTION: Archive collection of Dr. Charles Snowden Pancoast of Camden, NJ. Includes: 1) Ophthalmology kit. 2) Photograph of Dr. George McClellan's Anatomy lecture with Charles Pancoast in attendance. 3) "Refraction and How to Refract", fifth edition, by Thorington. 4) "An Inquiry into the Homoeopathic Practice of Medicine" by Henderson and Forbes. 5) "Diseases of the Eye" by De Schweinitz". 6) "Practice of Medicine" by Buchanan. 7) Photocopy of Dr. Joseph Pancoast's book "A Treatise on Operative Surgery". PROVENANCE: Dr. Pancoast studied at Jefferson Medical College and then graduated from the Medico-Chirurgical College in Philadelphia in 1910. He was one of the first surgeons to help in the first World War, leaving in 1915 for the Balkans and served in hospitals in Hungary and Bulgaria. He was considered to be a spy by the Germans and ill-treated during his time in Bulgaria. MEASUREMENTS: Various. CONDITION: Wear consistent with age, handling and storage including toning, abrasions and losses to surface. Inscriptions to most end pages of books. Lifting and pressure marks to top panel of ophthalmology case. Case appears to be missing very few items, see photographs.
