Item Details
Description
Africa, Ivory Coast, Côte d'Ivoire, Senufo, ca. early 20th century CE. A finely carved and incised hardwood pulley adorned with a characteristically elongated human head with elegant facial features, a drawn up coiffure with a curved horn-like central crest atop. A well-executed example in a classic style boasting deep and shiny aged patina. Size: 3" W x 9.625" H (7.6 cm x 24.4 cm)
Heddle pulleys were traditionally used in strip-weaving long narrow strips of cloth that were later sewn together to create a large textile. These pulleys were typically used in pairs, allowing for shifting the warp threads so that weft thread shuttles were able to pass through. Finely carved pulleys furbished with masks, figures, and heads like this one were intended to protect the weaver and assist him in producing beautiful cloth.
