Description
Africa, Togo, Ewe, ca. early 20th century CE. An early doll hand-carved from a single piece of wood by an Ewe artisan and clothed in a drawstring dress made from a pink and green on white floral fabric. Dolls like this example are called "venovi" or "venavi". The Ewe usually carve twin figures intended for protection following the death of a twin. Ewe women typically care for such dolls - cleaning and feeding them - and at times even using such dolls a child replacement. Size: 3" W x 7" H (7.6 cm x 17.8 cm)
