Electric Advertising Automaton for "Valda Pastilles" by Eduoard-Henry Phalibois, c. 1915
Depicting a beaming doctor and his suffering patient, with papier-mâché character heads, original paint, articulated eyelids, the doctor with articulated lower jaw, his female patient with outstretched tongue, on paper-covered platform with rotating sign for "Valda Pastilles, Quick Relief for all Bronchial Affections", wood base containing electric motor and eleven boxwood cams, eight for the doctor and three for his patient, running very slowly, in need of attention, ht. of figures 26 ½ in. (67 cm), base: 31 ½ x 16 ½ in. (80 x 42 cm), total ht. 35 ½ in. (90 cm), later wigs and clothing, hands replaced. The base with plaque: "Propriété de la Maison Caronne de Paris". – The doctor turns and nods his head indulgently, blinks and moves his mouth as though convincing customers of the merits of the pastilles he displays and then offers to his patient. He underlines his point with emphatic motions of the left hand as his shoulders and stomach shake with benign laughter. The female patient seems less convinced; she shivers and shakes in helpless coughing, then raises the handkerchief to her mouth, turns her head, blinks and sneezes uncontrollably. – An early, amusing and very animated advertising automaton.

Mit Darstellung eines strahlenden Arztes und seiner leidenden Patientin, Charakter-Köpfe aus Papiermaché, bewegliche Augenlider, der Arzt mit beweglichem Unterkiefer, die Patientin mit herausstreckender Zunge, auf mit Papier bezogenem Sockel mit drehendem Schild "Valda Pastilles, Quick Relief for all Bronchial Affections", Holzsockel mit Elektromotor und Mechanik mit 11 Nockenscheiben, läuft langsam, benötigt Justierung. Höhe der Figuren je 67 cm, Gesamtmaße 80 x 42 x 90 cm, Perücken und Kleidung ergänzt, Sockel mit Plakette "Propriété de la Maison Caronne de Paris". – Der Arzt dreht sich und nickt nachsichtig mit seinem Kopf, zwinkert und bewegt seinen Mund, als würde seine Kundin von den Vorzügen der Pastillen überzeugen wollen. Er unterstreicht dies mit einer empathischen Bewegung seiner linken Hand, des Bauches und den Schulter, wie bei einem gutartigen Lachen. Die Patientin scheint indes wenig überzeugt, sie zittert, hustet hilflos, hebt ihr Taschentuch an den Mund, zwinkert, dreht den Kopf und niest unkontrollierbar. – Ein früher, amüsanter und mit vielen Bewegungen ausgestatteter Werbeautomat.
