Description
Germany, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. This is a pottery brown glazed German Bellarmine jug, also known as a Bartmann jug, from the German "Bartmann" for "bearded man". These jugs were manufactured and used throughout Europe but are particularly associated with the Cologne region of contemporary western Germany. This example, like most from this region shows a bearded man's face on the neck and a seal or coat of arms below on the shoulder. Size: 6" W x 8" H (15.2 cm x 20.3 cm)
