Description
A late 16th century German silver single stacking beaker, maker's mark CK, a housemark device beneath (not traced), Colmar, circa 1588, the slightly everted rim engraved with three roundels with the date 1588, on a scroll foliate ground, a moulded girdle, on a short foot with a bead and lozenge band, 5.5cm (2 1/4in) high, 84g (2.7 oz) Provenance: from the collection of Lord Fitzwalter , Goodnestone Park, Kent. See Rosenberg 6118 for the town mark (taken from the town's coat-of-arms). See Schroder, Timothy British and Continental Gold and Silver in the Ashmolean Museum Oxford 2009, vol. 3, p. 1004-05 for a pair of stacking cups of circa 1550-60 made in Ulm. Colmar is in Alsace and has been French, almost always, since 1673.
