Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
Western Europe, Germany, near Cologne, ca. 17th century CE. A lovely pottery jug which was fired at a relatively high temperature - hence the name "stoneware" - and decorated with a dark-orange salt-based glaze which imbues the surface with a mottled, almost tiger-striped appearance. The form of the vessel is defined by a near-spherical body which tapers to a slender foot, a sloping shoulder which narrows to a cylindrical neck, a thick handle arching between the neck and shoulder, and a wide mouth ringed with several small grooves. In front of the neck is a portrayal of a bearded man (literally translated as "Bartmann") above an applied flower encircled with a raised rim. Size: 4.875" W x 8.9" H (12.4 cm x 22.6 cm).
For a stylistically-similar example, please see The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 17.203.5
