GERMAN BARTMANN / BELLARMINE STONEWARE LARGE JUG / BOTTLE, salt-glazed, "4" capacity stamp, ovoid form with sprig-molded bearded mask below the ringed mouth, double-groove handle with finger-impressed triangular terminal. Probably Frechen, Germany. 17th/18th century. 18 1/4" H, 5 5/8" D base.
Free of cracks, heavy wear to mouth, some other expected wear.
Provenance: From the Maury Lloyd Hanson, Jr. Revocable Trust for the Nature Conservancy, to be used solely for acquisition of land in the Piedmont and Shenandoah Valley areas of Virginia.
