Item Details
Description
This is a rare & important pipe tomahawk head dated to circa 1800 made by documented historic tomahawk maker, C.W. Bontgen. The pipe is from the Great Lakes/Prairie Region tribes circa 1800. The pipe was part of the large and respected Chandler-Pohrt collection and comes with a Certificated of Authenticity signed by Richard Pohrt Jr. and Hederschott Museum Consultants. The piece features a hand forged construction with nickel silver plating. This features a rare style of screw on and off pure silver pipe bowl along the top, very rare to have the original bowl as most were lost rendering the piece unsmokable. The blade shows the original hallmark design of crossed arrows and stars with the touchmark of famed blacksmith, “CH.W. Bontgen”. The head measures 7” x 2.25”W. From the Ex-collections of Chandler-Pohrt/Mark Francis. Excellent piece. Richard Pohrt Sr. is the author of “The American Indian/The American Flag (Flint Institute of Art, 1975)”. A copy of the COA is included.
