Item Details
Description
Native American, North America, Germantown, ca. 19th century CE. An iron tomahawk's poll with the side opposite the blade featuring a pipe, also known as a pipe tomahawk consisting of a bowl on the poll and a hollowed-out shaft. Created post-contact as the Europeans introduced the metal blade to the indigenous after their arrival in North America. Prior to this, Native Americans used stones that they attached to wooden handles with strips of rawhide. A wonderful example! Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 7.875" H (20 cm); 8.5" H (21.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private museum, J. P. Richardson collection, Massachusetts, USA; ex-Roland E. Engstrom collection, Massachusetts, USA
