This is an outstanding Mandan Native American Indian long stem & pipe dated to circa 1800-1820. The historic authentic piece shows a catlinite pipestone bowl measuring 4.75 inches by 2.25 inches tall and has an artfully carved vase shaped bowl with a taper having rings around the smoking chamber. The pipe also features a thin pointed prow, known to exist on all documented early pipe bowls. The long wood stem measures 28 inches long and is adorned with drops of trade yarn, old trade clothe, dyed horsetail hair, and bones all tied on with sinew. The entire stem length is covered in a thin wrap of hide/skin. This type of early smoking pipe was documented and noted in early paintings by Bird & Bodmer in the early 1800’s. This is truly a rare and authentic piece with terrific art appeal. The piece is pictured in the 20098 publication/book “The Mark Francis Collection of American Indian Art” page 56 figure 100.
