Greece, Corinth, ca. 7th to 6th century CE. A gorgeous and striking pale buff plate with black, red, and white motifs of swans and flowers. The plate stands on a small, round foot and the coil of pottery immediately below the rim bulges out into two miniature horizontal loop handles. The underside of the rim has been painted with a brown/black ring, but is otherwise buff. The interior of the plate has dense patterns. The rim is painted the same brown/black. Inside of that is a register of alternating swans and large flowers; they stand on a border of alternating thin red and white lines. In tondo is another series of tight, thin lines in red and brown/black. The swans are delightfully detailed, with white and red feathers. The artist has created the ornate iconography in part by removing small quantities of paint within the motifs to reveal narrow buff lines. Size: 12.1" W x 2.25" H (30.7 cm x 5.7 cm)

During this time, Corinthian plates showed the influence of eastern trade connections with the city - creating art with stylized plants and animal freezes, inspired by Egypt and Assyria.
