Description
ELDRIDGE CLEAVER 1968 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN POSTER
Original poster, 17" x 22", advertising the presidential campaign of Black Panther Party leader ELDRIDGE CLEAVER (1935-1998), titled "Cleaver for President", Peggy Terry for V.P." The poster features a large black and white photo of Cleaver speaking, beneath the campaign slogan (shared with the Panthers), "All Power To the People". The poster also lists the election date, Nov. 5, 1968, as well as the party under which Cleaver is running, the Peace and Freedom Party. A line at the top edge reminds voters: "A Vote for Peggy Terry is a Vote for Eldridge Cleaver", and also gives the address and phone number of Cleaver's campaign headquarters in Los Angeles. The bottom edge bears the credit "I.P.U. 416", likely identifying a printer's union. Having been born Aug. 1, 1935, Cleaver would have been one year shy of the constitutionally requisite 35 years old on Inauguration Day of 1969. Courts in Hawaii and New York excluded him from the ballot on these grounds. The poster shows a few bumps to the edges, else very good.
