Item Details
Description
Very Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Spouted Jar, Southern U.S. origin, possibly Texas, circa 1850-1880, ovoid form with narrow collar, semi-rounded rim, and applied open handles, the shoulder fitted with a wheel-thrown and tooled pouring spout. Majority of surface covered in a streaky, gray-green alkaline glaze, the base left unglazed. The handle construction and glaze on this example are closely-related to those found on a double-handled jug bearing the mark of Jefferson S. Nash, a Marion County, Texas pottery owner, which was sold in Crocker Farm's January 30, 2010 auction. Provenance: Recently found in Texas. Exceptional, highly-appealing form. Excellent condition with a 2 1/2" T-shaped line at base, continuing 2" onto underside. H 14".
