An English brass proportional dividing compass W. and S. Jones, London, early 19th century With sharp steel tipped arms each pierced with long slots for the sliding pivot assembly with knurled screw for securing against scales divided for Circles and Lines, the rear engraved W. & S. JONES, 30 Holborn, London beneath pivoted steel arm cut with a slot for locking to a threaded post applied to the opposing arm to allow fine adjustment via depthing screw, in original leather covered case 17cm (6.75ins) long; with a brass and glass syringe, J. Weiss and Son, London, mid 19th century, with finely turned T bar plunger and threaded caps for the cylindrical glass body incorporating brass tie straps one calibrated for Fluid Oz s, the other inscribed J. WEISS & SON, PATENT, LONDON, 80, the nozzle end with two taps, one positioned perpendicular to the tube at the collar and the other to the tip, 21.5cm (8.5ins) closed, (2). Provenance: The Maurice Gillet collection of microscopy, inventory ref. G3006 (proportional compass). The partnership between the brothers William and Samuel Jones is recorded in Clifton, Gloria Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851 as operating from several addresses in Holborn, London 1792-1859 (including 30 Holborn 1800-1860). John Weiss & Son are recorded by Clifton as surgical instrument makers 62 Strand and 287 Oxford Street, London, 1831-51.
