Coppock Limited, London, early 20th century, with leather grip and signed J. T. COPPOCK LTD. LONDON to final draw, 43.5cm (17.25ins) long extended and a patinated brass optical square, P. Orr, Madras, early 20th century, of cylindrical form with the upper section rotating against the lower section to reveal sighting apertures for the two prisms enclosed within, the upper surface stamped P. ORR & SONS, MADRAS, diameter 5.7cm (2.25ins), (3). Provenance: The Maurice Gillet collection of microscopy, inventory ref. G2264 (optical square). A H. Dallmeyer is recorded in Clifton, Gloria Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851 as working from 15 Castle Street, Holborn, London, circa 1851. J. T. Coppock and Son were probably successors of Charles Coppock who is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as working from several addresses in London from 1867 until after 1900. P. Orr and Sons were an important firm of silversmith s and retailers of clocks, watches, objects of virtue and works of art who occupied a substantial purpose built retail outlet on Mount Road (now Anna Salai), Madras from 1879.
