Roman Marble Head of a Ram
Roman Marble Head of a Ram
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. This is a fragment of a marble sculpture that included a ram's head; it may have been part of a funerary monument or something in the private home of an elite member of Roman society. Size: 4" L x 2.75" W x 5.25" H (10.2 cm x 7 cm x 13.3 cm)

In antiquity, Roman sculpture was richly decorated with colorful painting, gilding, silvering, inlays, etc., so this piece was probably very decorated at one time - the holes where the eyes are indicate that they were once inlaid. The ram was a common symbol of authority in Roman art; rams were also sometimes sacrificed as religious offerings. However, animals were not common subjects of Roman sculptors, and so this ram was probably once part of a sculpture depicting the followers of Pan/Faunus.

Provenance: Ex-Private New Jersey collection acquired before 1990
