Description
Rome, ca. 1st century CE. A fine terracotta oil lamp with depiction of two Roman gladiators engaged in a tussle. Mold-made from a rich red-orange clay, this lamp's sunken central discus depicts two male helmeted gladiators in combat, the standing figure emerging victorious over the kneeling one, with incised concentric banding surrounding; a stylized spout with rounded nozzle, and a loop handle enhanced via a twisted rope-like pattern. Size: 4.625" L x 2.875" W (11.7 cm x 7.3 cm)
