Roman, North Africa, ca. late 4th to early 5th century CE. A lovely set of mold-formed terracotta oil lamps with raised ring bases, rounded walls, plateaued shoulders, tab-shaped handles, a pair of fill holes, and large wick spouts. One lamp depicts a repeating motif of low-relief spiraling volutes and six-pointed stars which surround a low-relief crucifix adorned with diamond shapes and concentric circles. The second lamp exhibits a stamped circular shoulder of concentric circles, X-shaped forms, crescents, and spirals, all surrounding a recessed tondo bearing the "Chi-Rho," a monogram using the first two letters of the Greek "Khristos" for Jesus Christ. A fabulous ensemble of artifacts boasting some of the earliest forms of Roman-Christian iconography! Size of largest (Chi-Rho): 5" L x 3.375" W (12.7 cm x 8.6 cm).

Condition
Lamp with crucifix missing portion of tab handle. Both lamps have surface wear commensurate with age and use, light char marks to wick spouts, fading to some raised imagery, and fading to orange coloration. Light earthen deposits and nice encrustations throughout.
