Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 3rd to 5th century CE. A fantastic mold-made portrait vessel showing a figure holding a large panel of woven textile with a geometric pattern. He wears a headdress with a jaguar atop it and has a lifelike face. Cream, red, and orange slip, all burnished, give color and depth to the figure. Size: 5.9" L x 5.25" W x 8.3" H (15 cm x 13.3 cm x 21.1 cm)

The textile merchant stands, holding up an example of his finest wares, woven from alpaca and llama wool and made to grace royalty and elites. This is a wonderful scene that gives us a glimpse into everyday Moche life.
