President Abraham Lincoln Officially Acknowledges the Appointment of the Consul General of Portugal in 1862
ABRAHAM LINCOLN (1809-1865). 16th President of the United States, serving throughout the American Civil War until his Assassination at Ford’s Theater by John Wilkes Booth in April of 1865.
September 30, 1862-Dated Civil War Period, Partially-Printed Document Signed, “Abraham Lincoln” as President, 1 page, measuring 14” x 17”, Washington, D.C., Very Fine. Also Signed, “William H. Seward” as Secretary of State. Printed and completed on special heavy wove paper that is very even in tone, boldly printed with deep rich brown vivid engrossing, a long water stain seen along bottom edge outer margin selvage (that can be trimmed or easily covered when matted and framed for display) not near or affecting any text, light paper fold through the top letter portions of the signature. This impressive Document reads, in part:
“Satisfactory evidence having been submitted to me that Antonio Maria da Cunha Sotto Maior has been appointed Consul General of Portugal for the United States of America. I do hereby recognize him as such, and to declare him free to exercise and enjoy such functions, powers and privileges as are allowed to the Consuls General of the most favored Nations in the United States... (Signed) Abraham Lincoln”.
Here, the Document bears the full signature “Abraham Lincoln” which is written in easily readable and clear medium brown ink, measuring a large 3” long. An excellent Document for framing and display.
