Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a large, very detailed hollow terracotta figure handmade to stand inside of a shaft tomb. The level of painted detail here is excellent: a striped tunic, matched by a striped, wizard-like hat, and matching striped earrings and nose ring, give the impression of a very snappy dresser. An obvious phallus marks him as male. He holds a tumi/axe in one hand and a bowl in the other. Definitely a striking example that stands out from the crowd of ancient West Mexican figures. Size: 7" W x 12" H (17.8 cm x 30.5 cm)
