Fine Jalisco Pottery Standing Female Figure
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fine redware figure of a woman with classical Jalisco features. She stands with her short legs and arms wide apart, with a large face and prominent nose; her skull is elongated and she wears some kind of headdress or skullcap that flows down into earrings. She appears to be nude, and possibly pregnant. Size: 6" W x 9.4" H (15.2 cm x 23.9 cm)

These figures are from the West Mexican Shaft Tomb tradition and were made to be placed in tombs, where they lined the walls of the tomb while the deceased rested in the center, as if in conversation with each other.

Provenance: Ex-Private LA County collection acquired in the 1980's
