Description
Old Wooden dance mask or helmet from the Senufo peoples of Mali, West Africa. Carved wood with undeniable age and field use, this mask is crude and primitive, and shows plenty of wear and handling. The mask has been painted with a black pigment and accented with silver paint. This mask resembles the famous Fire Spitter masks,called Kunugbaha or "funeral head mask".The mask plays a part at the burial of initiates, driving the soul of the deceased to the land of the dead. The mask performer beats a drum while dancing and wearing a one-piece, deep red suit with geometric patterns. It is also plays a key role in anti- witchcraft ceremonies. The performer is able to peer out by using the masks open jaws. Measures 23 inches long x 10.5 inches wide. A durable metal display stand will also be included.

Well weathered, repair to fractures along top of head, missing teeth. In fair condition.
