Fantastic landscape illustration by the artist in strong shades, which can be included in his mature creative period. Poetic depiction of a female figure on a narrow path along the riverside.

Condition:

The sheet is loosely mounted in a passe-partout and is in good condition appropriate to its age. The image measures 36 x 54 cm, the sheet 44 x 60 cm. The frame measures 57 x 75 cm and has minor traces of usage.

Marc Sterling (1897-1976)

Sterling originates from a Jewish family in Ukraine and was born 1897 in Pryluky. At first he studied in Odessa, then in the early 1920s at the Vchutemas in Moscow. His works dating from this period are characterized by constructivism. In 1921/22 he stayed in Berlin, where his first exhibition took place. He moved to Paris in 1923 and joined international artist circles of the École de Paris. During Second World War he escaped with his family, yet returned after war to Paris. His later works testify to the exchange with international artists in Paris, the encounter with cubism right up to his personal lyric style of the later years, a kind of fantastic realism. Until his death in 1976 he exhibited regularly in galleries and salons.
