This photography on Baryta paper was made by the Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh in the year 1959. The vintage gelatin silver print shows the Bishop Fulton Sheen in Rome, who was one of the most important Christian figures in the USA of the 20th century. He was especially known for his preaching on television and radio.
The photograph is in very good condition, the corners are minimally worn. The work bears verso the copyright stamp and reference numbers in pencil. The sheet size of the photograph is 25.2 x 20.4 cm. It is taped on the upper edge (reversible) under a mat and has a total dimension of 40 x 30 cm.
Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002)
Yousuf Karsh was born in Turkey in 1908 and was sent to live with his uncle in Quebec at the age 16, who worked as a photographer and played a major role is Karsh’s artistic development. After his photography training with the photographer John Garo in Boston, Karsh opened his own photography studio in Ottawa. After the Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King took notice of him, Karsh portrayed numerous personalities from the show business, politics and scientific research, such as Albert Einstein, Andy Warhol and John F. Kennedy among others. He became internationally known in 1941 through his portrait of Winston Churchill. Karsh was a master of lighting and had the talent to capture the distinguishing qualities of a man in his portraits. Photographs by Yousuf Karsh are in the collections of the MoMa in New York, the Art Institute in Chicago and the National Portrait Gallery in London.
